Content Publishing Digest [2.01]:

What is Hybrid Book Publishing?
Is this Publishing Model for You?

In this article: "What is Hybrid Book Publishing? Is this Publishing Model for You?" we explore a new model in book publishing and what makes it ideal for some publishers and authors.

What is Hybrid Book Publishing? Is this Publishing Model for You?

If you are someone not familiar, or who has no clue, in the book publishing world, you may be confused and may have several questions.

You may not know how you should practically approach your publishing goals.

You may not even know how you would proceed, given the many aspects of technological advancement.

Of course, there is still the traditional publishing model.
Then, we saw some changes as we all approached the emergence of the print-on-demand or POD model. Some industry players embraced it. Some traditional publishers, once in a while, use the POD model (in publishing their books that are on their backlist of titles).

Still, a few other publishers and entities resisted the idea.

The birth of the self-publishing model came about. It triggered opportunities. Many book authors, who could not get their books published (in the sense of the traditional model), started to look into such a modern-day approach.

However, self-publishing has created some kind of a stigma in the book publishing world. Many distributors, book promoters, booksellers, retailers, and even institutions, such as schools and public libraries, could not automatically welcome such an idea. Many believed that many self-published books are not at par with the traditionally published books.

The problems may be due to poor book formatting, editing, and design. In other words, many self-published books turn out to be low-quality books.

Thus, how should one approach their publishing goals?

Some publishers and authors embraced the concept of a blended approach.

Hence, the rise of a hybrid publishing model.

So, what is the concept of hybrid publishing?
Hybrid publishing is a kind of book publishing endeavour in which both the publisher and the author invest together their money, energy and time on the book projects they create.

Hybrid publishing is a kind of book publishing endeavour in which both the publisher and the author invest together their money, energy and time on the book projects they create.

In essence, hybrid publishing is collaborative and dynamic.

Both the publisher and the author can be more creative in producing and promoting their projects.
If you look at it closely it characterizes an entrepreneurial publishing endeavour.

The publisher may invest in the pre-planning, production, marketing and distribution of books. While the author, depending on the finished manuscript, will have to shoulder expenses for professional editing, proofreading, interior formatting, front and back cover designs, and promotion.

A publisher may offer such professional services (at reasonable fees), depending on the extent of the requirements.

The book project timeline can be between six to eight (6-8) months and even up to a year or even a few more years. The reason being, they would like to allow some promotion or marketing period to make sure they are reaching out to their target audience.

Such an approach is similar to how movie producers and actors create a film project. That is to ensure that they are practically using their resources (on their creative project) according to their goals.

The hybrid publishing model allows both the publisher and author to create better collaboration and communication. They are open to ideas. They work on their project considering many factors. The bottom line is, they are achieving their goals in the long run.

Some ideal authors under the hybrid publishing model may be business consultants, entrepreneurs, artists, influencers, and corporate executives. They believe in book publishing as a tool to create, if not enhance, their thought leadership brand.

Book project formats can come in paperback, hardcover and ebook.

If you are working on a fiction project or novel, find out how you can publish your novel using this hybrid publishing model. Check out this Masterclass' article: How to Use Hybrid Publishing to Get Your Novel Published >>
